It’s that time of year where we are all itching to buy new room decor for the holidays, however, we must be careful. With the rise of AI, it has not only consumed the internet, but physical artwork that is completely AI generated found in stores, such as TJMAXX. Not only is painting generated using an AI algorithm, but the artist's bios are also completely fabricated. Customers have pointed out recent examples such as logical errors; a carved pumpkin having an extra stem growing from the inside or inconsistent textures and facial features across a collection of works. Of course, TJMAXX has received backlash from employees and customers have voiced their frustration on the matter through social media platforms like Reddit, Instagram, Tiktok and Facebook.

For instance, a viral video on Tiktok involved framed pieces of artwork with the artist's name being a creator named "Franklyn," whose bio strangely claimed he "never learned traditional drawing". Meaning, we are not even trying to hide the fact that artists is using AI to generate artwork. Not only is this just plain sad, but this is starting to take away the value in creativity and take away people's jobs.

We may not be able to control whether AI generated art is massed produced, however, we can take steps to ensure we do not purchase this “art”. When spotting details that are a dead giveaway that a painting is AI, you can check to see if there is an author's signature or not. AI paintings will not have a human artist's signature or copyright information. There will also be elements like background patterns, extra body parts, like fingers, or weirdly fused objects that look fine at first glance, but with a closer look, you'll notice the abnormalities. Lastly, Mass-printed AI illustrations frequently have an overly saturated yellowish overtone across different pieces in the same aisle.

So, when shopping for room decor, keep an eye out for potential AI generated art or don't shop at TJMAXX. Go to small businesses, spot the signs of human generated art, or make your own!
