Last week, the Campus Lantern published an article looking into parking at Eastern. This article is, in a way, a companion or second part of that article. The table below provides data as to the housing options present on campus. The numbers for current residence were provided by Paul Serignese, Housing Director, while the numbers for maximum occupancy are found on the Eastern website's page for each residence hall.
Name of Residence Hall | Students Currently Residing There | Maximum Student Occupancy |
Burnap Hall | 60 | 87 (69% Full) |
Burr Hall | 44 | 76 (58% Full) |
Constitution Hall | 187 | 250 (75% Full) |
Crandall Hall | 48 | 87 (55% Full) |
High Rise | 179 | 194 (92% Full) |
Laurel Hall | 241 | 255 (95% Full) |
Low-Rise | 201 | 265 (76% Full) |
Mead Hall | 252 | 308 (82% Full) |
Niejadlik Hall | 122 | 140 (87% Full) |
Noble Hall | 115 | 155 (74% Full) |
Nutmeg Hall | 229 | 246 (93% Full) |
Occum Hall | 173 | 243 (71% Full) |
Shafer Hall | 74 | 91 (81% Full) |
Winthrop Hall | 32 | 37 (86% Full) |
Total: | 1957 | 2434 (80% Full) |
Approximately 80% of student occupancy at Eastern is taken up, at the moment. The three emptiest dorms are Crandall Hall (55% Full), Burr Hall (58% Full), and Burnap Hall (59% Full). The three fullest dorms are Laurel Hall (95% Full), Nutmeg Hall (93% Full), and High-Rise (92% Full).
Splitting the campus into regions, North Campus (Occum, Mead, Crandall, Niejadlik, and Burnap) has the capacity for 865 students (36%); Central Campus (Low-Rise, High-Rise, Constitution, Nutmeg, Laurel and Winthrop) has the capacity for 1,247 students (51%); and South Campus (Burr, Shafer and Noble) has the capacity for 322 students (13%).
Paul Serignese himself tied the housing data to parking, saying, "...what I have heard from residents is their real complaint is a lack of parking near High Rise, Low Rise, Nutmeg, Laurel, and Constitution because they don’t have a lot near them like Shafer or Noble. I’d also add that when the parking ban is in effect for open air lots, commuters are typically not on-campus at that time."
